Real wood vs. composite — the honest comparison

We sell both, so you’ll get the truth about each:

  • Real wood — lighter weight (kinder to hinges on wide panels), crisp fine-line detail, and it takes stain — the only way to get a true wood-grain finish. The classic for living rooms, bedrooms, and anywhere the shutter is part of the room’s furniture.
  • Composite — heavier, paint-finish only, but impervious to moisture. In kitchens, baths, and laundry rooms it simply outlasts wood — no swelling, no finish trouble.
  • Our rule of thumb — wood where you live, composite where you splash. Plenty of homes mix both, room by room, and that’s usually the smart order.

“The first generation of our family built everything in wood. We still love it — we’ve just learned where the new materials honestly do it better.”

Our story

Two brothers. Twenty years each. Four generations of craft.

We’re Chris and Vinny — brothers, and fourth-generation window and shutter craftsmen. We grew up in this trade and spent the last two decades mastering it. We started Window & Shutter Co. to carry the family’s work forward.

When you call us, you get the family on your project from the first measurement to the final walkthrough. That’s what family values means to two brothers who grew up in this business: quality craftsmanship, four generations deep.

How custom shutter pricing works

We don’t publish a price, and we’d rather explain why than hand you a number that turns out to be wrong. Interior shutters are made to the window they go into — they mount inside the opening, so every panel is built to that opening’s measurements. That is why an honest price comes after measuring, not before. A number given sight-unseen is a guess, and guesses get corrected upward later.

What actually moves the number:

  • How many windows you’re covering — and which rooms actually need it
  • Size and shape of each opening — arches, angles and specialty shapes are their own job
  • Louver size — it changes how the room looks and how much light and view you keep
  • Material and finish you choose
  • How the frame has to be fitted to your opening, and how easy that opening is to reach

What you get instead of a guess: a free in-home estimate with samples, and an exact price in writing for your openings — no obligation. Financing is available over 84 months on approved credit, and the lender confirms the terms. We also offer a price match guarantee; your estimator explains exactly how it works.

The process

How the work actually runs

Four steps — and the family is involved in every one of them.

  • Free in-home estimate, with samples. We look at every opening you’re considering and bring the actual materials so you can see and handle them. No obligation.
  • Professional measure. Every opening is measured properly, because what you order is manufactured to those measurements.
  • Custom manufacturing. Your shutters are then genuinely made to your windows — Norman lines.
  • Installed by the family’s own crew. Not handed to whichever subcontractor is free that week.

We’ll give you realistic expectations on timing in person, once we know what you’re ordering — manufacturing time depends on what you choose, and we’d rather be accurate than optimistic.

Questions

Common questions

Can wood shutters be stained to match my trim?

Yes — that’s the great advantage of real wood. We’ll match against your existing woodwork during the in-home visit with samples in hand.

Will wood shutters warp?

Quality hardwood shutters, properly finished and installed in dry rooms, hold their shape for decades. In high-moisture rooms we’ll steer you to composite — honestly, that’s what it’s for.

Do you make custom shapes?

Arches, angles, and specialty openings — yes. Custom-built means built to your opening, whatever shape it is.

Do you repair windows, or replace glass only?

No — we’re a replacement company. We don’t take on repairs or glass-only work, and we don’t install skylights. If that’s what you need, we’d rather tell you now than waste your afternoon.

Which areas do you serve?

Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, plus parts of Riverside and San Bernardino. If you’re not sure whether you’re in range, call and ask — it’s a thirty-second answer.

Which shutters do you install?

Norman shutters — custom interior plantation shutters and wood shutters, made to your openings. For replacement windows we install Milgard. We don’t carry every brand on the market, and we’ll tell you plainly what we do and don’t sell.

Do I have to decide at the estimate?

No. The estimate is free and there’s no obligation. You get your measurements and an exact price in writing, and you take as long as you like with it.

When can I reach you?

Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Messages left after hours or at the weekend are checked, and we’ll come back to you.
